Am I a Scrooge?
Jesus is NOT the reason for the season
Actually, the tilt of the earth on it’s axis and the way it revolves around the sun is the reason for the season. Of course, when you hear the saying “Jesus is the reason for the season” they are actually talking about the Christmas season. They are saying that the Christmas season exists because of Jesus. This is wrong for several reasons.
First, “Christmas” although not called by the same name, predates Christianity. The Christians basically took over the celebration of Sol Invictus from the Romans. This holiday was to celebrate the day when the sun reversed it’s southward movement.
What are the odds?
I often here Christian arguments along the lines of “the chances that we would have naturally occurred and that are world would be just perfect to be able to support life are so great it is inconceivable to think that God did not create us.”
I’d like to argue that point with an analogy. If you were to win the lottery, you would think that you were pretty special. Imagine the odds. But the fact is that someone had to win the lottery and if it wasn’t you, it would be someone else who is thinking they must be pretty special.
The Kalam Cosmological Argument
The Kalam Cosmological Argument is an argument that attempts to prove that God exists. I’ll first lay out the argument as best I can and then I’ll state the criticism for the argument at the end.
(1) Everything that has a beginning of it’s existence has a cause of it’s existence.
This is basically saying that everything has to have something that came before it that caused it to happen. So, there can’t be a first event (such as the big bang theory) because something before it has to have caused it. Thus, we have an infinite number of events. If there is an infinite number of events, then there can be no first cause, and if there is no first cause, there can’t be a first event, or any event thereafter.
The all-or-nothing argument
Currently there is an argument going on about whether or not to allow global variables in PHP code. The argument to remove global variables is that globals are bad coding practice and should be removed completely. I am of the opinion that there is nothing wrong with using globals as long as it is used sparingly. They have the ability to simplify code and make it easier to read. However, because they are also easy to abuse, many people have determined that they should be banned completely and that they should never be used.
Socialism, politics, and other thoughts
The Constitution of The United States of America
Our fore fathers risked their lives (and many died) for our Independence. They believed in what they were doing and put everything they had into. They set this great country in motion and I believe we all owe them a great deal of gratitude. So I mean no disrespect with what I am about it say.
You don’t know jack about global warming
And neither do I. But let me explain. Chances are the first time you heard about global warming, you formed an opinion one way or the other. Who or where you first heard about it had a heavy impact on which way you sided with. Then, being curious about it you read more and talked to others about it, but the vast majority of what you read was biased towards your original opinion and the people you talked to likely held the same opinion as you.
